Join us and Celebrate - Connect with your local community and help reduce stigma!

 

The Mental Health & Wellbeing Services Expo is being held on Tuesday 8th October at the Ann Harding Conference Centre from 10:00am – 1:00pm. The Mental Health & Wellbeing Services Expo is an event to promote positive mental health and wellbeing within the community, it is also the launch of ACT Mental Health Week. The theme of Mental Health Week is connectivity, stigma reduction and encouraging help seeking behaviour.

 

The expo showcases services working in the health and community sectors together to promote their services, network and celebrate the work that we do.

Mental Health Week is an annual event celebrated in Australia and over 100 countries in an effort to raise community awareness and understanding of mental illness, encourage the reduction of stigma and discrimination against people living with mental illness, and promote positive mental health and wellbeing. 

 

When is Mental Health Week?

The week-long event, commencing on Sunday 6th October to Saturday 12th October 2013, provides an opportunity to engage the wider community in learning more about mental health and illness issues

Women's Centre for Health Matters - Women, Mental Health & the Law

 

The ACT Women and Prisons Group and the Women’s Centre for Health Matters are hosting an afternoon of interactive theatre exploring the relationship between gender, mental health and the law. 

 

Playback is a form of theatre where actors create the show using real life stories from the audience!

 

This is a unique way to explore social issues and build empathy and understanding.

 

This event aims to bring together mental health consumers, women with experience in the criminal justice system, policy makers, service providers (legal, mental health or otherwise), and interested members of the public to share stories, listen and learn.

Belconnen Community Service – Free Blood Pressure Checks and Free Personal Training Sessions

 

Training sessions will be 45 minutes, available by appointment at Belconnen Community Cente gym:

Tuesday 8th and 15th October from 10.30am, Wednesday 9 and 16 October 1.30 – 5pm, and Thursday at 2pm.

 

Non-gym based sessions are available on Friday.

 

Gentle exercise classes: Tuesday & Thursday at 2pm, yoga and stretch Wednesday 9th and 17th October at 1.30pm.

Carers ACT - Understanding Carers Rights

 

To celebrate Mental Health Week, Carers ACT is hosting a forum for mental health carers to raise awareness of their rights.  The forum aims to provide participants with practical tools and strategies that are empowering as well as useful for families and friends in a caring role.

 

An exciting line-up of guest speakers from diverse backgrounds will present and engage in a Q&A with forum participants:

ACT Mental Health Consumer Network - 'Mad Hatters' Tea & Croquet Party


Craving a sweety? Parched for a cup of Darjeeling?

 

Come early, come late (but not very late), as we gather to get a little bit mad and enjoy an afternoon of sun, tea and croquet, with a smidge of class. 

 

Our good friends at Swish Vintage will be providing a delightful selection of succulent sweets and savouries. Games will be had. Tea will be drunk. Good times will be had by all!!!

To celebrate Mental Health Week  headspaceACT will be in  Tuggeranong on Thursday 10th October

Home in Canberra Vision Launch

Following the successful establishment of HOME in Queanbeyan on 1 July 2010, the HOME Board has much pleasure in inviting you to the launch of a vision for a HOME in Canberra at the Hotel Realm on 10 October 2013.

HOME is a community-driven initiative that provides 24/7 supported accommodation for people with enduring mental illness who cannot live independently, are at risk of being homeless, or may be homeless. 

First and foremost, it is a place of love and friendship.

But while HOME in Queanbeyan is transforming lives, there are still far too many people in Canberra and the region that are sick, unloved and homeless. 

We urgently need another HOME: A HOME in Canberra. 

We would love to see you at our launch to gauge the level of support within the Canberra community for turning the vision of a HOME in Canberra into a reality.

  • A facilitated panel discussion followed by a networking event
  • Five people on a panel representing LGBTI people living with mental illness and those impacted by mental illness; for example, parents, partners and friends
  • The panel will discuss concepts in a ‘question and answer’ style presentation

Mental Health Foundation - 15th Annual Ten Pin Bowling Challenge

 

The Mental Health Foundation is hosting this years bowling challenge on the 11th of October 2013 at Belconnen AMF.

 

This event is the focal point and highlight of Mental Health Week for many local mental health consumers and supporters.  It is a fantastic event that allows everyone the opportunity to socialise, have fun, connect with friends/colleagues and meet new people.

 

MHF are excited to have as many participants as possible for this fun filled experience.  There will be prizes for first, second and third place, along with a prize for the best performing team, the best dressed team and most creatively named team. 

 

The Ten Pin Bowling Challenge is an essential part of mental health rehabilitation including breaking down the barriers with the wider community by improving self-image and giving confidence to individuals to mix and participate with members of the broader community. It also provides the opportunity for members of the wider community to connect with and learn something about people living with a mental illness.

 

The cost for 2 games will be $15 for Mental Health Consumers and $20 for staff and service providers.  This price will also include shoe hire, snacks and a drink.

 

MHF ask everyone if they could confirm their booking by the 4th October so they can finalise numbers with the venue.

 

This will be a fantastic fun-filled day and we look forward to hearing from everyone.

Ms Amanda Bresnan is the Patron of ACT Mental Health Week 2013. 

 

Amanda Bresnan ACT Mental Health Week 

 

From October 2008 to 2012 Amanda was an elected Member of the ACT Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the ACT Greens. Amanda was the ACT Greens spokesperson for health, disability, housing, ageing, multicultural affairs, transport and corrections. During her term, Amanda was Chair of the Standing Committee on Education, Training and Youth Affairs, and Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Health, Community and Social Services. Amanda was also Chair of the 2012 ACT Budget Estimates Committee. 

A major focus of Amanda’s work as an MLA was on preventative and mental health. As a part of the Parliamentary Agreement with the ACT Government, Amanda and her colleagues negotiated the inclusion of an item to work towards 12% of health funding to go to mental health and 30% of the funding to go to community-based and run services.

 

Prior to being elected as an MLA, Amanda was the Acting Director of Policy and Projects for the Mental Health Council of Australia, and prior to that the Policy Manager at the Consumers’ Health Forum of Australia.

 

Amanda is currently working with ConNetica Consulting, and is a Board Member of the Asthma Foundation ACT and member of the Advisory Group for Global Sisters, an Australian microcredit project for refugee women. Amanda is a keen Bollywood dancer and supporter of her beloved rugby league team, the Brisbane Broncos.

 


ACT Mental Health Week - Reimbursement Program 2013

ACT Mental Health Week begins on Sunday 6th October and continues through until Saturday 12th October 2013. National Mental Health Week is centred around World Mental Health Day, held every year on the 10 October and provides an opportunity to engage the wider community in learning more about mental health and illness issues. 

ACT Mental Health Week in our community aims to raise awareness and understanding of mental illness, encourage the reduction of stigma and discrimination against people living with mental illness, and promote positive mental health and wellbeing. 

The ACT Mental Health Week Committee annually coordinates a Reimbursement Program to support community organisations and groups to hold events during Mental Health Week.  Reimbursements of up to $1000 (GST Inclusive) are offered to organisations and groups to assist the development and running of mental health promotion activities during Mental Health Week.
