What is Mental Health Week?

Mental Health Week is an annual event celebrated in Australia and over 100 countries in an effort to raise community awareness and understanding of mental illness, encourage the reduction of stigma and discrimination against people living with mental illness, and promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

When is Mental Health Week?

The week-long event took place in 2016 from Sunday, 9 October to Saturday, 15 October.

In 2017, Mental Health Week is expected to run from Sunday 8 October to Saturday 14 October.

World Mental Health Day is on Monday, 10 October every year.

What is the theme for Mental Health Week?

The theme for 2016 in the ACT was Learn and Grow Together.

Mental illness is predicted to affect almost half of all Australians are some point during a person’s lifetime. It will affect people in different ways and this year we want to celebrate our diversity as a community.

The theme for 2017 is still being decided.

Objectives of Mental Health Week

  • Raise awareness about and promote mental wellbeing and positive mental health
  • Decrease the stigma surrounding mental illness
  • Celebrate the achievements and recovery of people who live with mental illness, their families and carers
