ACT Mental Health Sector Update - 17 October 2019

In this edition:

It's still Mental Health Month! … the centrepiece of the month, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Expo, went off beautifully last Thursday, and bigger than ever thanks to the unstinting efforts of Maddie Cook, our Communications Officer.  We still have the Peer Work panel event coming up on 22 October, and the Mental Health Month Awards on Tuesday 29 October (see it listed below under 'events') and there are still a further 17 great events yet to be held around Canberra - see the MHM calendar for details.  Below are stories about the ACT Public Advocate drawing attention to inadequacies in the NDIS in working with psychosocial disability, a series of articles on mental health in the workplace, an important webinar on NDIS Practice Standards, a new NDIS 'demand map' to help services plan, there's been a small drop in suicides, continuing lack of access to mental health services in our prisons and Australia is being urged to donate more money to help with the mental health of children in war zones. It's not too late to get 'early bird' rates for our 'Understanding and Responding to Trauma' two-day workshop on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 November - but be quick!  Coming up, we have our subsidised Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).  Look out for an email about that one next week.

Cheers, and here's to your mental health!
